After a great night's sleep on the docked boat, (the rocking is really nice), this morning is a guided walk around Split's Diocletian's palace. This amazing building
was built at the end of the third century AD as a residence for the Roman emperor, Diocletian and today forms about half of the town of Split. While it is referred to as a "palace" because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the structure is massive and more closely resembles a large fortress: about half of it was for Diocletian's personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison. Inside it has remains of two churches and palace ruins. It is also home to a few people and has hotel apartments, shops and restaurants within it. Huge.
This a shop of plastic ducks. We do not understand this but apparently it is a thing and there is more than one duck shop. And then back on the boat for a two hour cruise to Brac for a trip to the town of Bol.
Photos as we approach the Island of Brac:
On arrival in Bol, we were free to explore in our own time but Karen, the tour leader, suggested a walk to a nearby beach.
Her words: easy walk and not far.
In fact, it was a long walk with some up hills and down hills to a pebbly beach. No sand but beautifully coloured water. The colour and clarity of the Adriatic ocean is amazing. Side note: at one stage there was a crossroads, north to the nudist beach and south to the normal beach. We all went south.
Photos from the walk:
Interesting to see all the preparations going on for the upcoming summer season. Today is officially the first day of the season but there is still painting and even building going on. There will be resorts, water activities, bowling and so many bars and tourist stuff but today nothing is open on the walk until we get to the beach.
There is one bar open right on the beach. The boat crew are spotted having a few drinks there. Obviously a team building exercise and no need for concern for our safety later on board. After a walk on the very pebbly beach, we turned around and went back.
Photos from the beach:
And some surprising residents of the area:
Ther are lots of feral cats everywhere. Weird. There is a young couple on board who are really into cats and are going to start a luxury cattery on their return to England. Seriously!!! Anyway they appreciate the cats!
All in all it was a 4 km walk to and from. I was stuffed but Paul did another kilometre to a pretty bridge on the other side.
After a rest, it was time for dinner which again was great. They even had more gf bread. Dessert is still an issue. The normals had a black forest cheesecake which looked divine. I refused to take a photo. My dessert was a Neapolitan icecream with a few of the cherries from the cake. Not bad but....
After dinner there was a trivia contest which our table of 8 won. Of course. The prize was a bottle of fig liquor shared between the 8 of us. So good.
And some beautiful photos from the boat:
Tomorrow we swim.......
